Observation
I noticed something that happens when family gets together.
Someone brings up a memory.
Then another one follows.
Some memories disappear quickly. Others stay because they contain something unusual: a strange moment, an uncomfortable silence, a joke, a misunderstanding, a scene so specific that it becomes part of the family mythology.
I wanted to keep those stories somewhere.
As stories.
Fictionalized enough to become readable, but close enough to preserve the texture of the original moment, the awkwardness, the timing, the punchline, the thing nobody expected.
Through different rounds of writing and sharing, one style began to emerge.
Short. Observational. Funny without trying too hard. Written from inside the moment.
I started calling it the AV Slice style.
Question
Could family memories be preserved as fictionalized microstories?
Could a collection of these stories become something more durable than memory alone?
Experiment
The experiment began with the writing itself.
The first stories came from memories. The ones that kept resurfacing because they were too good to let go.
They were published first at avslices.wordpress.com and later shared in other spaces to gather feedback.
The sibling who never explained themselves.
The moment when someone was caught and everyone knew it.
These are my stories. I shaped them, and wrote them down. No one else in the family would have done this in the same way, and that is part of what the experiment is about.
The collection currently holds thirty-three stories. They move across different stages: childhood inside a loud, funny, complicated family; the years of becoming; and now, motherhood. The observer remains the same. The stakes change.
A book felt too closed for this experiment.
A reader app felt more appropriate.
Something quiet. Searchable. Expandable. Alive enough to grow with the collection.
The AV Microstories Reader was built as that medium.
A simple reading environment for short fictionalized family stories. Each story can be read in a few minutes. The reader supports browsing, searching, categories, covers, and a bilingual English / Spanish reading experience.
The bilingual layer mattered from the beginning.
Future Directions
The reader exists.
The stories exist.
The style exists.
What does not yet exist is a written framework for how to create an AV Microstory.
The AV style has a recognizable shape: an ordinary moment, a shift, an escalation, an emotional truth, and a closing line that lands without explaining too much.
Writing that framework clearly enough that future stories can follow it is one direction for the experiment.
There are also more stories to add.
It may become a way to explore how families preserve the moments that would otherwise disappear.
